- First Chinese 3D TV Drama to Broadcast after Spring Festival02/04/2010 - 08:57
Wu Chengen and Journey to West (Wu Chengen Yu Xiyou Ji), the first Chinese TV drama produced in both 2D and 3D formats, will start broadcasting around the Chinese New Year, reports Beijing Youth Daily. The drama has 46 episodes and each episode is 45 minutes long. Around 12 minutes in each episode will appear in 3D format. The drama is produced by Mei Ya Spring International Drama & Film Communication Co Ltd and Beijing Yongtong Film & Drama Culture Development Co Ltd with a production budget of RMB100 million (US$14.64 million).

The second installment of the Chinese animation Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf (Xi Yangyang Yu Hui Tailang Zhi Huhu Shengwei) premieres on January 29 in mainland China, reports Modern Express (see related story). Shanghai Media Group and Creative Power Entertainment, the film’s producers, also announced that it’s third installment will be produced in 3D format in 2011. The film’s first episode made RMB100 million (US$14.64 million), setting a new box office record for an animated Chinese film.

The State Administration of Radio, Film and TV (SARFT) and Shenzhen government will jointly hold the 1st China International New Media Film, Drama & Animation Festival from May 14 to 17, according to the SARFT website. The Festival will take place during the Shenzhen Culture Expo. Golden Rock Awards will be awarded for the Best Director, Best Script, Best Editor, Best Visual Effects, Best Creativity and Best Production for the short film, documentary and animation categories. A trade fair and forum will also be held during the Festival.

January 2010 saw RMB1 billion (US$1.46 billion) being made at the box offices across China, with Avatar being responsible for the highest contribution, reports Liaoshen Evening News, quoting The Hollywood Reporter. According to the report, there has been a nearly 40% increase in box office earnings in comparison to January 2009 with RMB670 million (US$98.10 million) box office earnings. After opening on January 4, Avatar has made RMB862 million (US$126.21 million) at box office in 28 days, accounting for 80% of the total box office in January 2010. Other films screened over the same period include Bodyguards and Assassins (Shiyue Weicheng) that contributed RMB75 million (US$10.98 million), The Spy Next Door contributing RMB39.50 million (US$5.78 million) and Confucius (Kongzi) contributing RMB28 million (US$4.10 million) in January.

Google is facing a negative impact on its sales in China as a result of its threatened withdrawal from the market, reports China Business News. In the face of increasing concerns from registered Google China agents, the paper suggests new orders may have decreased 30% year-on-year and even quotes some agents noting January sales declines of up to 50%.
