Korean Drama Prices Hit By SAPPRFT Policy
January 26, 2015

Local reports have top bidding prices for the latest Korean drama, “Hyde Jekyll, Me” coming in at less than US$100,000 per episode: A demonstrable drop after the reported US$280,000 per episode licensing fee earlier paid by Youku Tudou for “Pinocchio.”

Analysts put the reason for the dramatic drop in price squarely on SAPPRFT’s new policy that that all episodes of any imported series must under censorship clearance prior to broadcast. This process is expected to take at least six months, leaving half a year for the content to be widely available on the pirated market thereby lowering viewer’s interest.

Korean newspaper reports have “Hyde Jekyll, Me” production company HE&M spokesperson commenting “if we accept the unreasonable price now, we are afraid all business will shrink for the future.” The spokesperson went on to note that the policy runs contrary to the Free Trade Agreement signed between Korea and China.
