Oscar Winners Deemed Unsuitable for China

Most of films that were awarded Oscars are not suitable for the mainland Chinese market reports Nanjing Daily. The reason for this is that they were released in North America a long time ago and most of them are low to medium budget independent films, explains Weng Li, the spokesperson of the China Film Group Corporation (CFG). "We prefer importing new Hollywood films which we can release almost simultaneously with US cinemas, such as for example Avatar, Up and Sherlock Holmes", Weng added. "Small and medium budget films such as the Blind Side, Crazy Heart, Precious and The Cove actually did not perform very well at the US box office and so our distributors do not want to take the risk of importing them. The decision whether or not to import a foreign film depends on the cinema audience's taste rather than Oscar awards."
